Mustangs dominate second half, settles for 0-0 draw at ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State was unable to convert a dominating second effort into a positive result Monday afternoon as the Mustangs settled for a scoreless draw here with Eastern New Mexico.

"We were disappointed after coming off a big win on Friday," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "This is a tough place to play and they were ready to play. We missed a PK and we had to put that away."

The tie snapped MSU's four-match winning streak sending the Mustangs to 5-3-1 on the season, while the Greyhounds went to 7-3-2.

Goalkeeper Nick Petolick continued his superb play by notching his fifth consecutive shutout. The sophomore out of Frisco Wakeland made five saves including four in the opening half to extend his streak of scoreless play to 476:43 since taking over primary keeper duties.

The Mustangs controlled the run of play after intermission, but couldn't cash in on a penalty kick opportunity in the 52nd minute. ENMU goalkeeper Severin Niessen's save of Paul Sunderland's penalty extended scoreless play.

"The keeper guessed right," Elder said. "We had our chances and we have to figure out how to win these tight ones."

MSU junior forward Len Smith's header off of a corner kick serve by Andrew Power was saved off the line by an Eastern New Mexico defender in the 86th minute as the Mustangs controlled a 10-2 edge in shots during the second half of play.

ENMU forward Kal Herbert challenged Petolick with a shot in the 61st minute then had another attempt glide wide to provide the 'Hounds with their lone offensive pressure in the second half.

Neither side was able to place a shot on frame in the first overtime period, while Niessen saved a shot off the head of MSU senior B.A. Catney in the 109th minute.

"I didn't feel like we played our best game, but felt we played strong defensively," Elder said. "I'm disappointed we didn't get the result. We played two tough teams and came back with a win and a tie. I'm not disappointed too much. It would been nice to get both of these."

Midwestern State hits the road to take on No. 6 Northeastern State (Okla.) Friday night at DeLoache Field in Tahlequah. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
