MSU deals #5 RiverHawks first loss for Elder's 200th career win

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Doug Elder's 200th win as the head men's soccer coach at Midwestern State just couldn't happen with any more flair.

Andrew Power tallied an effort goal in the final five minutes of regulation then Len Smith headed in the golden goal in the first overtime as the Mustangs handed No. 5-ranked Northeastern State its first loss of the season 2-1 Friday night at DeLoache Field.

"The 200th win doesn't mean as much to me as how hard the guys played tonight," Elder said. "I was really proud of them. This was one of the more complete games we've played all season. Everyone got it done. Guys came off the bench and provided a great spark. We played hard, with passion and a desire to win today. I think Northeastern felt it."

The RiverHawks (5-1-3) put MSU in hole when Crosby Lee back heeled a shot inside the far post on a serve from Jordan Schmoker in the 52nd minute.  It was first goal allowed by sophomore keeper Nick Petolick, who has keyed the Mustangs' current six-game unbeaten streak by stringing together five consecutive shutouts.

Things didn't seem to be going Midwestern's way despite the determined effort working late into the second half.

Senior midfielder B.A. Catney hit the post in the 60th minute, while Power banged another shot off of the crossbar efforting for the elusive equalizing goal.

"We played the last 20 minutes with an attacking mid and only three in the back," Elder said. "Everyone pitched in. It was a complete team effort."

Finally, determination paid off with the clock winding down as Power found the net for the fourth time this season in the 86th minute from an unlikely position -- his backside.

"Someone took it down the line and they had a lot of people playing behind the ball," Elder said. "He kind of turned and kicked it while he was on the ground. It was a great effort.   Andrew played his best game of the year."

The Mustangs dominated the run of play in the second half by controlling a 16-8 edge in shots forcing NSU goalkeeper Eric Shepherd to make seven stops.

Then in overtime, sophomore Ben Clarvis worked his way down the left wing serving a cross to Smith, who headed in his sixth goal of the season for the game winner.

"This is a hard place to play," Elder said. "We're excited to be able to come from a goal down and get the win. We hit the pole, the crossbar and had some really good chances. I feel we really deserved what we got."

It doesn't get any easier for the Mustangs (6-3-1) as they take on 23rd-ranked West Texas A&M Tuesday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
