MSU MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME DAY: Mustangs gunning for 6-0 start in LSC at Angelo State

MSU Men's Basketball Game Day

Midwestern State looks to move to 6-0 in Lone Star Conference for just the second time since joining the league prior to the 1996-97 season Saturday night against Angelo State at Junell Center/Stephens Arena in San Angelo. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

MUSTANGS FAST BREAK

LAST TIME OUT: 'Zaigo Williams and Derek Kaster tallied season highs as Midwestern State survived Abilene Christian 72-71 Thursday night at Moody Coliseum. Williams, a junior transfer guard from Western Texas, erupted for 19 points and accounted for a big block of Eric Lawton's potential game-winning 3-point effort in the closing seconds. Kaster, a junior forward from Moreno Valley, Calif., matched a season-high tallying 13 points in the opening half.  Sophomore guard Keith Spellman returned from injury to net 14 points off of the bench while Cam Adderley heated up for 12 second-half points.

MSU STAYS PERFECT IN LSC: Midwestern State improved to 5-0 with its 72-71 win Thursday night at Abilene Christian. The Mustangs remain in sole possession of first-place in the Lone Star Conference ahead trailed by a trio of teams at 2-1 -- Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State. West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico are 2-2 followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville at 1-2 while Abilene Christian and Angelo State are 1-4.

TRAILING AT THE HALF: Midwestern State has gotten off to quick starts in each of its last two games, but railed for the ninth time in 12 games this season when Abilene Christian rallied to claim a 34-33 advantage at the half Thursday night. The Mustangs are 6-3 this season when they trail at the half and have overcome deficits of at least 8 points six times this season. Conversely, the Mustangs are 24-0 over the last two seasons when they control an advantage at the break.

TRENDING HALVES: Midwestern State has trailed at halftime nine of 12 games this season. To compound that, the Mustangs have faced double-digit opening half deficits in five games this season. MSU shoots just 39.3 percent as a team and owns a narrow +0.8 rebounding margin prior to intermission. On the flip side, Midwestern has outscored the opposition in the second half in each of their 12 games by an average margin of 10.8 points a game. The Mustangs connect on 49.9-percent of their shots from the field after intermission while out-rebounding the opposition by a +7.1 margin.

JUST GIVE ME A SECOND CHANCE: Midwestern State has out-rebounded or matched the opposition in each of its 12 outings this season as the Mustangs lead the Lone Star Conference in offensive rebounds per game (15.9) and offensive rebound percentage (43.3) and is second in the league in rebound margin (+8.1). MSU has converted 191 offensive rebounds into 191 second chance points, which accounts for an astounding 21.3-percent of its total scoring output.

'ZAIGO LIGHTS UP CATS: Junior point guard Monzaigo Williams connected on 6-of-10 shots from the field including a pair of 3-pointers while going 5-of-6 from the line to book a season-high 19 points Thursday night against Abilene Christian. Williams ranks 18th in the Lone Star Conference with 11.5 points a game while leading the league with 5.6 assists per contest.

KASTER CONNECTS IN FIRST HALF: Junior forward Derek Kaster needed just a half to match a season high with 13 points in the first stanza Thursday at Abilene Christian. Kaster knocked down 5-of-9 shots from the field in the first half and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He did not score after halftime. The output matched his high-water mark set against Louisiana State-Shreveport in MSU's season opener.

AND ADDERLEY TAKES SECOND: Junior guard Cam Adderley's mid-range game hit the mark at a 6-of-8 clip in Thursday's 72-71 win at Abilene Christian. His 12-point performance was a season as it was Adderley first 10-plus point performance as a Mustang.

RETURN OF THE WIZARD: Sophomore guard Keith Spellman returned from injury to pour in 14 points in 23 minutes off of the bench including a 7-of-9 effort from the charity stripe. It was Spellman's seventh 10-plus point effort of the season but first since scoring 15 at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Dec. 1, 2012.

NEXT TIME OUT: Midwestern State concludes a four-game road stretch Wednesday night at Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs return to D.L. Ligon Coliseum Saturday night against rival Tarleton State.
