KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Keidrick Jackson rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns as No. 15 Midwestern State rolled to a 45-28 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at Javelina Stadium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 2-1 on the season, plays Incarnate Word in their home opener Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Midwestern offense chewed up 615 total yards including 421 on the ground as Jackson and sophomore running back
Jimmy Pipkin (113 yards on nine carries) broke over the century mark.
"The backs ran really well today," MSU coach
Bill Maskill said. "We made it an emphasis that the backs had to run more consistently. The backs ran really, really hard."
The Mustangs exploded for 28 points in the second quarter highlighted by three 1-yard scoring runs by Jackson and an 89-yard burst by Pipkin to build to help MSU to a 35-7 halftime advantage.
"It was a very good first half," Maskill said. "We celebrated too much at halftime because we came out in the third quarter and didn't do anything offensively."
Led by quarterback Bryan Erlich, who finished with 415 yards on 28-of-55 passing with three touchdowns, Texas A&M-Kingsville stormed back in the second half.
Erlich connected with Sherman Batiste on a 52-yard slant for the only score of the third quarter before Joseph Vela hit Robert Armstrong on a reverse pass for 9 yards to pull the Javelinas to within 35-21 with 14:54 to play.
But Jackson had an answer breaking three tackles on a 73-yard scoring burst to give the Mustangs a three touchdown lead at 42-21 just 19 seconds later.
Erlich and Vela hooked up on a 35-yard TD pass with 12:16 for the Javelinas but it was too little, too late.
MSU sophomore
Chauncey Harris added 66 rushing yards on five carries, while junior
Peter Smith chipped in 60 yards on seven totes as four MSU runners notched rushes of 36-or-more yards.
Senior quarterback
Brandon Kelsey connected on 11-of-21 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown while senior wideout
Jared Freeman led the receiving corps with 71 yards on four receptions including a 15-yard TD in the first quarter.
Texas A&M-Kingsville dropped its second straight game to fall to 2-2 on the season.
