WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Keidrick Jackson rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 14th-ranked Mustangs to a 34-7 win over Incarnate Word Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
MSU has now won three consecutive games to improve to 3-1 on the season while the Cardinals fell to 1-4.
The Mustangs chewed up 260 yards on the ground while halting six UIW drives in plus territory as the Cardinals struggled mightily to 4-of-17 on third downs and converted just one of eight fourth-down tries.
MSU wasn't much better going 1-for-9 on third downs, but used a 6.4 yards per play average to overcome the discrepancy.
Senior quarterback
Brandon Kelsey, who connected on 11-of-20 passes for 163 yards, rolled 56 yards for a first quarter score.
Incarnate Word responded with a 4-yard TD reception from Zach Rhodes to Matt Bass to answer the score, but it would be all MSU from that point forward.
Greg Saladino connected on field goals from 47 and 30 yards out while Jackson tacked on TD rushes of 6 and 4 yards to give the Mustangs a 27-7 edge through three quarters.
Kelsey linked up with
Joe Sanders on a 23-yard TD connection with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to wrap up all scoring.
Junior defensive lineman
Elijah Winston keyed the Mustangs defense with six tackles including four stops for a loss and three sacks while
Vernon Brooks and
Hunter Hale also accounted for sacks. The Mustangs intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble while notching 10 pass breakups and seven quarterback hurries.
UIW freshman running back Joseph Sadler rolled up 115 total yards inkling 68 on the ground while snagging four aerials for 47 yards to lead the Cardinals.
Midwestern State takes West Alabama Thursday night on the road in Livingston. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
