MSU's strong attack not enough to beat Cardinals

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State enjoyed one of its best offensive outputs of the season placing three hitters with double-figure kills Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

But it wasn't enough to overtake Incarnate Word as the Mustangs fell in four sets -- 25-18, 20-25, 26-28, 22-25.

Junior middle blocker Caitlin Wallace led the way with 13 kills while hitting .385 while junior outside hitter Beatriz Villalba (.455) and sophomore middle blocker Kasey Decker (.409) posted matching season highs with 11 kills.

The teams exchanged blazing offensive outbursts in the opening two sets as MSU committed just three errors with 13 kills in a 25-18 win in the opening set.

The Cardinals responded by slamming down 21 kills to take a 25-20 win in the second set.

Both teams had an efficient attack in a back-and-forth third set, but Incarnate Word carved out a 28-26 win by taking advantage of four critical service errors in the momentum deciding set.

The Cardinals took an early lead in the fourth set and held on for the 25-22 clinching victory in the fourth set.

UIW was paced by Tina Chavis who put down 14 kills while Kelci Lind and Angelique Vidaurri posted 12 and 10 kills apiece.

Sophomore Casey Fletcher led back row efforts with 23 digs while setters Kristan Aduddell (21 set assists, 15 digs) and Courtney Haney (7 kills, 24 set assists, 12 digs) each posted double-doubles as well as Villalba who had 10 digs.

Midwestern State (2-9, 0-3) takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

Incarnate Word improved to 4-7 on the season and to 1-2 in LSC play.
