The Lady Buffs (3-3-1 Overall, 2-1-0 LSC) hit the road for just the second time this season. West Texas A&M has won three of its last five matches -- all in Canyon -- including a pair of 2-1 setbacks to Texas A&M-Commerce and Dallas Baptist. WT is 0-1-1 away from its home pitch this season including a 3-3 draw with Colorado Mesa on Aug. 31 at the MSU Soccer Field and a 4-1 loss on Sep. 2 at Colorado-Colorado Springs. The Lady Buffs are led by dynamic Senior forward
Leslie Briggs, who has tallied nine goals and dished out three assists through just seven games this season. Briggs recorded a hat trick in WT's 3-3 draw with Colorado Mesa earlier this season at the MSU Soccer Field. Freshman midfielder
Emily Krenek and sophomore midfielder/forward
Jessie Thomas have scored two goals each for a WT attack that averages 2.14 goals per game. Junior primary goalkeeper
Yvette Bedoy had allowed 10 goals through five matches this season with a 1.91 goals against average and a .756 save percentage.
All-Time Series: Series tied at 13-13-1.
Coach Trimble on the Lady Buffs: ""Leslie Briggs is really getting going now. She’s scoring a lot of goals and creates very well for them. WT a very strong, organized defensive team and she really helps them offensive end.”

The Zias (2-5-0 Overall, 1-2-0 LSC) battled for a 1-0 conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday in Portales but have struggled mightily away from home this season. Eastern New Mexico is 0-4 against a tough road slate which has included shutout losses at Hawaii Pacific (2-0), at BYU-Hawaii (1-0), at Colorado Mines (8-0) and at West Texas A&M (3-0). ENMU has struggled on the attack netting just four goals including single tallies by sophomore defender
Victoria Perez, senior midfielder
Danielle Thurman, junior forward
Brook Serrano and sophomore midfielder
Angela Sandoval. Freshman primary goalkeeper
Xan Ortiz has allowed eight goals in six games this season posting a 1.45 goals against average and a .750 save percentage. The Zias score 0.57 goals per game and allow 2.29.
All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads series, 8-1-1.
Coach Trimble on the Zias: "Eastern New Mexico is a very possession oriented team and like to knock it around to feet. We have to play good, organized defense against them and not start chasing the ball. That can get you in trouble. Our games tend to be really tight. They are a good team and they will be a great challenge.”
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Freshman midfielder
Ashley Cottrell's goal at the very end of the 90th minute propelled Midwestern State to a 1-1 tie in its Lone Star Conference opener last Friday at Angelo State. That spark carried over to Sunday as sophomore forward
Payton Fookes' goal off of a restart in the 34th minute stood up for a 1-0 win at Incarnate Word. The positive result allowed MSU to shake off an 0-4 start and now the Mustangs can scale to the top of the Lone Star Conference standings with strong performance against West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico this weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.
Cottrell and
Fookes along with freshman forward
Kaila Maxey and senior midfielder/defender
Megan Barnhart have single tallies to account for Midwestern's four goals thus far in 2012. Junior center back
Anna Molen earned LSC top defensive honors this week, but had plenty of help in a strong back line effort last week including big time help from seniors
Berklee Dressler and
Hanna Staley and great performances from freshmen
Alex Edwards and
Alexandra Copp who were making their first collegiate starts in the back.
Coach Jeff Trimble said: "It was a very positive experience last weekend. We have a lot of energy coming into this week. We played inspired soccer. It took us a while to get going and needed a heart attack goal to get us started but that really got us going. We’re hoping that will translate to this weekend.”
