MSU survives rally for 9th-straight win, edges Javelinas 10-9

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Christina Roosmalen's two-run double in the sixth inning proved to be the different as Midwestern State completed a sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 10-9 win in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Hubert Field.

The Mustangs claimed their ninth consecutive victory to improve to 23-20 on the season and to 13-10 in Lone Star Conference play, but not before surviving another Javelina rally which left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Brenna Hennan induced back-to-back ground balls to kill including cutting down the tying run at the plate in a one-out, bases loaded situation. The former Burkburnett standout allowed one run on three hits in three innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 5-9 on the season.

For the third straight game, the Mustangs didn't waste any time in jumping out to a lead as Courtney Bingham drove an RBI double to left center field and Kelley Schaefer chased in two more with a single to center field for a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Schaefer drove in two more with a single through the right side of the TAMUK infield in the second inning to push the lead to 5-2 and the Mustangs tacked on three more in the third to up the advantage to 8-2.

But the Javelinas got to MSU starter Lindsi Glenn for six runs in the fourth inning keyed by a two-run single by Amber Cherry to tie the game at 8-8 through four innings of play.

Glenn allowed eight runs - six earned - on 12 hits in four innings before giving way to Hennan.

Midwestern pushed across two runs in the sixth as Elena Bennett reached on an error and Bingham singled up the middle before Roosmalen delivered the two-run double to the left-field gap.

Texas A&M-Kingsville's Denise Arnold took the loss to fall to 7-14 after allowing 10 runs - five earned - on 11 hits while striking out four in the complete game.

Midwestern State travels to Lawton take on Cameron in a single game Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
