STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs closed their Lone Star Conference regular season with an 6-1 loss to Tarleton State Thursday evening at the Tarleton Tennis Complex.
The 39th-ranked Mustangs (7-12, 2-3) allowed the 31st ranked TexAnns (10-7, 1-3) their first Lone Star Conference victory of the season.
The Mustangs only point was scored at No. 3 doubles as
Leah Roberts and
Taylor Coffman beat Sylvia Nieva-Garcia and Kayla Deatheridge 8-1.
But the Mustangs narrowly missed winning the other two doubles points, as MSU's Rozike van Rensburg and
Lindsey Holcomb fell at No. 1 to Karla Martinez-Hamden and Melanie Barnes 9-8. MSU's team of
Sarita Adhikary and
Lindsey Buenger lost at No. 2 to Alicia Perez-Gonzalez and Makenzie Mitchell by the same 9-8 score.
The Mustangs were then swept in the four completed singles positions to take the match.
Adhikary lost to Martinez-Hamden at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3, and Holcomb fell to Barnes at No. 3 by a 7-5, 6-1 count.
Coffman lost at No. 4 to Nieva-Garcia 6-4, 6-2, and van Rensburg dropped the point at No. 1 to Perez-Gonzalez 6-4, and trailed 5-4 when she retired.
The Mustangs must wait for the TexAnns match on Friday against Texas A&M-Kingsville to learn of MSU's seeding in next week's Lone Star Conference Championships in Southlake.
MSU closes the regular season on Saturday as part of a men's and women's doubleheader against Arkansas-Fort Smith at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
