WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 34th-ranked Midwestern State pulled off the upset Wednesday evening as they handed 22nd-ranked Cameron a 5-4 Lone Star Conference loss at the MSU Tennis Center.
MSU (8-10, 1-3) grabbed the third seed in next week's LSC Tournament with the win, while Cameron (14-8, 0-3) fell to the fourth seed.
"We came ready to play," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "I felt we really embraced the moment during the match and took advantage of it. It was a great match."
The Mustangs got the jump on the Aggies by claiming two of the three doubles points, as
Colby Meeks and
Mario Urban defeated Mateus Campos and Gonzalo Garzon at No. 2 8-5, then
Luke Joyce and Kacper Bobrykin went long at No. 3 to beat Duje Janjic and Dean Wiegelt 9-8.
Jarrod Liston and
Tomas Grejtak fell at No. 1 to Thomas Peixoto and Nicolai Ferrigno 8-3.
Then in singles the match tightened.
Cameron's Ferrigno beat Meeks 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 to even the match at 2-2.
But almost simultaneously, Liston downed Garzon 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Joyce handed Janjic a 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 2 that put MSU one win away from clinching the match.
The Aggies claimed No. 6 as Gerosi beat
Jay Henton 7-5, 6-4.
But MSU got Boborykin to come through at No. 5 over Campos 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to win the match.
Urban would not give Cameron any momentum, as he took 38th ranked Peixoto to three sets before falling at No. 1, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
"We played ourselves right where we need to be for the conference tournament," said Linn. "I'm proud of the guys."
The Mustangs close out the regular season on Saturday against Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 10 a.m. match at the MSU Tennis Center. The LSC Tournament is next Friday and Saturday in Southlake.
