No. 39 Midwestern State falls at No. 26 Central Oklahoma 7-2

EDMOND, Okla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs grabbed two of the three doubles points, but couldn't hang on as the Central Oklahoma Bronchos handed the Mustangs a 7-2 loss Thursday at the UCO Courts.

The 39th-ranked Mustangs (5-9) played close in four of the singles contests, but the 26th-ranked Bronchos (9-5) were able to pull the sweep.

"We carried the momentum for a while from winning doubles," said Coach Scott Linn.  "But they raised their level and we didn't respond to the challenge.  But we played better than we did against Dallas Baptist (on Tuesday)."

The Mustangs jumped out on top thanks to the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams.

Taylor Coffman and Kendra Casey battled from behind to win No. 2 over Rose Cabato and Anna Kochigina 9-7.

"I thought the energy and determination of Casey and Coffman was fantastic," said Linn.

Rozike van Rensburg and Lindsey Buenger took the No. 3 point with an 8-6 win over Anto Rossini and Sowmya Pulumati.

The Mustangs lost the No. 1 double point to UCO with Lindsey Holcomb and Sarita Adhikary falling to Julia Shviadok and Elizabeta Abramovic 8-2.

But in the singles, UCO came on strong in the end.

The Mustangs got off strong at No. 1 with van Rensburg taking a first set over Abramovic 6-4, but the Broncho came back to win the point 6-3, 6-2.

Holcomb did the same at No. 2 with a 6-2 first set, but Shviadok countered by winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.

Casey really fought hard at No. 4, falling to Kochigina 7-5, then claiming the second set 6-2.  But Kochigina rallied in the third set to take the point 6-4.

Coffman took the first set at No. 5, winning the first set 6-2.  But Cabato came back to take the second and third by identical 6-4 scores.

Adhikary lost to Rossini 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3, while Buenger lost at No. 6 to Pulumati 6-3, 6-0.

The Mustangs join with the men to take on East Central in Ada on Saturday.
