ADA, Okla. – The 39th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs had little trouble in picking up their sixth win of the season as they ripped East Central 7-2 at the ECU Tennis Courts Saturday.
MSU (6-9) ended a six-match losing streak with the win over the Tigers (1-10).
"We did a great job of carrying the momentum from early in doubles into singles," said Coach
Scott Linn. "We ran out of gas at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but they bring it every day and we couldn't do it without
Lindsey Holcomb and Rozike van Rensburg."
The Mustangs opened it up with a clean sweep of doubles, led by Holcomb and
Sarita Adhikary at No. 1. They beat Mara Valles and Bernadita Muscillo 8-2.
Kendra Casey and
Taylor Coffman had no problem at No. 2 against Elisabeth Dignard and Kristen Clubb 8-3, with van Rensburg and
Lindsey Buenger rolled at No. 3 against Agostina Moran and Aurelie Rodriguez 8-3.
In singles action, the Mustangs dropped points at the top in three sets each. ECU's Valles beat van Rensburg 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 1 and Muscillo downed Holcomb 2-6, 6-1, 11-9.
But those were the only points the Mustangs suffered, taking the other four singles points with relative ease.
Adhikary beat Dignard at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2, to go with the No. 4 win of Casey over Moran 6-1, 6-4.
Coffman won at No. 5 over Clubb 6-3, 6-2, with Buenger taking Kelsey Kerr at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
The Mustangs off until Wednesday when they hit the road for a double-header in Abilene. MSU meets Hardin-Simmons in the morning before facing Abilene Christian in a Lone Star Conference match in the evening.
