DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs suffered a sweep Monday as Embry Riddle blanked MSU 9-0 at the Crotty Tennis Center.
The second ranked team in the NAIA, Embry Riddle (9-1) pulled out two tiebreakers to keep Division II's 30th ranked Mustangs (5-5) from scoring.
"While we didn't win, it was good experience to play at team that will compete for a national championship," said Coach
Scott Linn. "(Luke) Joyce and (Tomas) Grejtak competed extremely well."
The Mustangs battled hard at No. 5 singles as Grejtak dropped two tiebreakers to 19th ranked Peter Francis 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 11-9.
Jarrod Liston also fell in a tiebreak in his opening set at No. 4, losing to Adrian Bayh 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Mario Urban lost to the top-ranked player in the NAIA, Chris Freeman at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, with Patrick Besch defeating Joyce 6-4, 7-5.
Kacper Boborykin fell at No. 3 to Simon Felix 6-1, 6-1, while
Jay Henton lost at No. 6 to David Spennare 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Liston and Grejtak gave the top-ranked NAIA doubles team of Bayh and Besch all they wanted before the Embry Riddle squad won 8-6.
Colby Meeks and Urban lost at No. 2 against Freeman and J.R. Leonik 8-3, while Henton/Joyce lost at No. 3 to Felix/Francis 8-2.
Midwestern continues their road swing through the Southeast on Wednesday against Rollins in Winter Park, Fla.
