WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's one-two punch of
Kirsti Degelia and
Savannah Carver proved too much for Angelo State Saturday night leading the Mustangs to an 83-70 Lone Star Conference win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU improved to 16-4 on the season and moved to 12-2 in league play by claiming its season consecutive victory, while the 'Belles fell to 11-9 and 9-5.
The Mustangs used a stellar effort from the free throw by hitting 23-of-25 charity tosses including perfect 8-for-8 performances by Degelia and Carver, who finished with 24 and 20 points respectively.
MSU used a late first half 11-4 run to push out to a 39-28 halftime lead, but behind the efforts of Paige Weishuhn and Ashley James Angelo State methodically worked back to within 60-58 on Lauren Holt's layup with 8:42 to play.
Weishuhn accounted for 18 of her team-high 21 points in the second half, while James completed a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
But Degelia penetrated the lane for six points in a 13-2 run which was highlighted by a Carver 3-pointer from the left wing and her two free throws at the 5:33 mark re-established a 73-60 advantage.
Senior forward
Jazman Patterson added 12 points and nine rebounds as the 83 MSU points represented the most Angelo State has allowed this season.
The 'Belles dipped to 11-9 and 9-5 on the season.
Midwestern State takes on Incarnate Word Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
