WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Savannah Carver poured in 20 points for the third consecutive game to lead Midwestern State to a 76-65 Lone Star Conference win over Incarnate Word Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The win was the 10th consecutive victory for the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as they improved 17-4 on the season and to 3-2 in league play.
With a win on Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Mustangs will play Tarleton State for the conference lead Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Midwestern led by as many nine points in the opening half, but Incarnate Word clawed back to within 35-32 at intermission.
The Mustangs used a 10-2 run late in the second half after Chloe Wallace gave UIW its lone lead of the second half on a jumper with 7:22 to play.
Carver kicked off the run with a runner in the lane before
Kirsti Degelia converted a transition layup. Freshman guard
Dianna Jones culminated the run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to give the Mustangs a 68-61 edge with 3:54 to go.
Degelia completed a perfect night by going 4-for-4 from the floor including a season-high three 3-pointers to finish with 14 points to go along with three assists and two rebounds.
The Mustangs got a pair of strong inside performances from senior forward
Cierra Thompson (9 points, 9 rebounds) and freshman
Andrea Carter (9 points, 10 rebounds).
Jones pitched in nine points and four rebounds while senior
Jazman Patterson had seven points and seven rebounds.
Katy Cooke connected on five 3-pointers to score 19 points to lead the Cardinals, who fell to 11-11 on the season and to 6-10 in conference play.
