GAME DAY: #6 MSU draws Lions in LSC postseason opener

Midwestern State clinched a share of its sixth Lone Star Conference championship closing the regular season with a 79-64 win over Eastern New Mexico.
 
The Mustangs open the LSC postseason tournament with Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night at the Allen Event Center.
 
The winner moves on to face the winner of Wednesday night's other quarterfinal match between Incarnate Word and Cameron.
 
The Mustangs and Lions tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
 
Midwestern State claimed a share of its sixth Lone Star Conference championship with a 79-64 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
The Mustangs appear to control their own destiny to host its second South Central Regional in the last three years, but need a perfect run through the tough LSC postseason tournament to secure any kind of guarantee.
 
MSU owns a conference-best 18-6 mark in annual postseason bracket play and is making its 12th appearance in the tournament.
 
For the fifth time since the year 2000, Midwestern takes a top seed into tourney play as the Mustangs were the South No. 1 in 2000, 2007, 2009 and 2010 claiming the title in each of those years.
 
The Mustangs have won their last five first-round matchups by an average margin of 16.4 points a game and last lost an opener in 2004 – at Tarleton State (93-87).
 
MSU boasts an records of 8-3 in the quarterfinals (first round), 5-3 in the semifinals and have claimed championships in each of its five trips to the final round.
 
The Mustangs are led by senior guard Michael Loyd. The Las Vegas native averages 13.1 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. Loyd has knocked down nine of his last 16 shots from the arc over the last three games and has scored in double figures in 12 of his last 13 outings.
 
Senior guard Keonte' Logan has come on strong from 3-point range over the last 10 games. The Wichita Falls native has hit 16-of-24 shots (66.7 percent) from the arc during the stretch to average 6.4 points and 3.4 assists and 3.3 rebounds a game.
 
Senior forward David Terrell leads the team with 39 dunks this season and has been very efficient over the last 10 games as well. The LSC field goal percentage leader is shooting 83 percent from the field (44-of-53) while averaging 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds over the run.
 
Junior forward Anthony Harris returned from suspension to score nine points and pull down four rebounds in 20 minutes Saturday against Eastern New Mexico. Harris is averaging 11.9 points and 4.8 rebounds this season.
 
Senior guard JaMichael Rivers hit 6-of-9 shots to finish with 15 points raising his season average to 10.7 points a game.
 
MSU's senior starting forward combo of Darrick Thomas (6.1 points, 5.0 rebounds) and Thomas Colbert (2.7 points, 4.1 rebounds) have also stepped up play over the last 10 games.
 
Junior guard DeJuan Plummer adds scoring punch off of the bench averaging 6.2 points a game.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS
 
Texas A&M-Commerce (10-16) won three consecutive games after losing nine of 10 to clinch the eighth and final seed in the 2012 Lone Star Conference postseason tournament with an 83-78 win over Angelo State Saturday night at home.
 
The unlikely run started with road wins over Eastern New Mexico and Abilene Christian as the Lions were just 1-9 on the road going into the stretch.
 
Texas A&M-Commerce was selected fourth in the league's preseason poll and has the lineup back up the selection.
 
Forward Desmond King was the 2011 LSC North Player of the Year and has enjoyed a solid senior campaign.
 
The Alexandria, La. native averages 15.0 points per game while pulling down 5.8 rebounds. He shoots 55 percent from the field and works his way to the free throw line nearly seven times a game.
 
Senior sharpshooting guard Brad Hambrick averages 12.8 points and 2.7 assists per game. The Sherman native has connected on 59 of his 144 shots from beyond the arc (41.0 percent).
 
Junior forward Preston Whitley adds 11.1 points and 4.0 rebounds a game, while sophomore guard Devondrick Walker adds 9.0 points and 3.8 rebounds a contest.
 
Texas A&M-Commerce coach Sam Walker boasts a 192-147 record (.566) in now his 12th season at the helm of the Lions.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
 
Midwestern State meets Texas A&M-Commerce for the 76th time on the hardwood Wednesday night at the Allen Events Center.
 
The Mustangs own a 45-30 edge in the fourth longest running series in Midwestern history which dates back to the 1946-47 season.
 
MSU has won the last nine meetings between the programs dating back to a 87-61 loss to the Lions on Feb. 7, 2005 in Commerce.
 
The Mustangs have won each of the three meetings between the programs in the LSC postseason tournament play. MSU beat the Lions in the semifinal round in 1999 and in the first round in 2001 and 2011.
  
Midwestern State slipped one spot to No. 6 in the NABC Division II poll and remains one vote of ahead of rival Tarleton State as the Texans came in at No. 7. The Mustangs have carried a national ranking for 32 reporting periods since the start of the 2008-09 season.
