Tarleton State edges Mustangs 66-61

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs saw the Tarleton State TexAnns go on a 7-0 run in the final minute and 15 seconds to beat MSU 66-61 Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs (18-5, 14-3) had climbed out of an 11-point hole in the second half to build a three-point 60-57 lead with 1:54 to play after Karissa Lang hit a pair of free throws.

But the TexAnns (18-6, 15-1) canned four free throws by Shelby Adamson while the Mustangs got one of two from Savannah Carver to see the game tied at 61-all with a minute left.

But the Mustangs turned the ball over on the next two possessions leading to Tarleton State points and the TexAnns never looked back.

"We didn't keep our focus as a team down the stretch," said MSU Coach Noel Johnson.

"We took some rushed shots, we missed some layups and missed some free throws and those all add up in the end.  It just didn't come down to any one turnover."

Carver and Kirsti Degelia led the Mustangs with 13 points each, while Lang collected 11 points including hitting 3-of-4 from the three-point arc.

Cierra Thompson and Andrea Carter each grabbed eight rebounds for the Mustangs.

Tarleton State was led by Shelby Adamson's 15 points, including 11-of-14 from the foul line.  Wright double-doubled with 12 points and 18 rebounds.  Peyton Adamson added 14 points, while Shanae Lowrance chipped in 10.

The TexAnns take a two-game lead in the Lone Star Conference standings with four games to play.  The Mustangs, who have three games remaining, are one game in front of West Texas A&M in second.

MSU is off until Saturday when the Mustangs visit Denton to meet Texas Woman's University in a 2 p.m. game at Kitty Magee Arena.
