DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State got a career-high 17 points from senior
Jazman Patterson, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell to the Texas Woman's Pioneers 59-54 in Lone Star Conference action Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.
The Mustangs (18-6, 14-4) saw the game hinge on play around the 3-point arc.
MSU entered the game as the top team in the LSC in 3-point shooting and the eighth best team in the nation in 3-point shooting defense. However, MSU managed only 1-of-10 from the arc offensively, while allowing Texas Woman's (13-11, 8-10) to connect on 6-of-15 (40 percent) from long-distance.
"We didn't play well together or communicate together today," said MSU Coach
Noel Johnson. "TWU had a good game plan and we didn't adjust well."
The Mustangs trailed by 10 at the half and by as many as 14 in the second half.
Down 13 with 3:58 to play, the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to close the game to a bucket at 54-52, but a missed free throw and two free throws by the Pioneers' Jessica Hanna cut the run.
TWU connected on five of eight free throws in the last 29 seconds to seal the win.
MSU shot 48 percent from the floor, but connected on just 11-of-21 shots from the foul line (52 percent). TWU shot 41 percent from the floor and connected on 9-of-13 from the foul line (69 percent).
Patterson pulled down nine rebounds to go with her 17 points and bettered her previous career-high of 16 points set Jan. 27, 2010 against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
"Jazman posted hard, she faced up and attacked the basket," praised Johnson. "She was 3-of-4 from the free throw line and she ran the floor great."
Senior
Savannah Carver added 15 points, while senior
Cierra Thompson popped for 12.
The Pioneers got 17 points from Hanna as the defending LSC Champions have now knocked off the top two LSC teams in consecutive home games.
Crystal Atwood scored 12 points for TWU, while Brittney Nuzum chipped in 10 points.
Coming off the loss to Tarleton State as well, MSU dropped consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 15 and 18 when they lost to Newman (Kan.) and Central Missouri.
The Mustangs must now get ready for another tough LSC road game on Wednesday when they visit West Texas A&M in Canyon.
