KINGSVILLE, Texas - Southern Arkansas plated six runs off of three errors as the Muleriders ended Midwestern State's five-game winning streak 8-4 Sunday morning in the Texas A&M-Kingsville Invitational at Hubert Field.
Still, the Mustangs claimed four wins in five tournament games to move to 6-3 on the season, while Southern Arkansas improved to 5-5 on the season.
MSU returns to action at the MSU/Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational beginning Friday at Mustangs Park. The Mustangs open with Abilene Christian Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before playing Arkansas Tech and Missouri Southern on Saturday and Texas A&M International and Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Sunday.
Midwestern freshman shortstop
Kelley Schaefer staked the Mustangs to an early 2-1 lead on a two-run single up the middle in the first inning.
But the Muleriders took advantage of Mustang miscues in to plate two runs in the second frame and three more in the third - all unearned to chase MSU starter
Lindsi Glenn and take a 6-3 edge.
Glenn eventually took the loss to fall to 5-2 on the season allowing six runs - one earned - on eight hits in three innings while striking four and walking one before giving way to fellow frosh
Brenna Hennan.
Hennan delivered a solid relief performance allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
The Mustangs pulled within 7-4 on
Christina Roosmalen's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, but were unable to push across a run after loading the bases in the seventh.
Junior outfielder
Elena Bennett paced MSU's 10-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Schaefer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
