Mustangs fall to Abilene Christian 4-3 in 9 innings

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Abilene Christian converted both of its opportunities in international tiebreaker to play to take 4-3 win over No. 20 Midwestern State in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Wildcats (7-1) executed sacrifices in the eighth and ninth innings leading to sacrifice flies by Kimberly Briggs and Sarah Martinez to provide the difference in the game as ACU improved to 7-1 on the season.

The Mustangs struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first innings as Courtney Bingham and Elena Bennett set the table by reaching on a hit batsman and a walk, respectively.

Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney promptly drilled a single to right field to plate Bingham before Kelley Schaefer dropped a safety squeeze down the third baseline to plate Bennett to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Abilene Christian starter Peyton Mosley, who improved to 1-1, settled in to blank MSU over the final six frames of regulation. She allowed two earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and three walks in the complete game win.

The Wildcats evened the game in the second inning on a pair of run-scoring singles by Erin Gilliland and Courtney Flanary to knot the game at 2-2.

MSU starter Lindsi Glenn (5-3) performed admirably while going the distance in the circle for the Mustangs. The freshman permitted two earned runs on six hits over nine inning while fanning two and walking two.

The Mustangs forced a second extra inning as Bennett raced into score on a muffed throw at first base on Mooney's sacrifice attempt in the eighth inning.

Midwestern (6-4) continues tournament play with games against Arkansas Tech and Missouri Southern at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Mustangs Park.
