SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs picked up a strong victory over the top ranked junior college team in the nation as MSU took down Laredo Community College 6-3 Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs (2-1) split the two doubles matches played and claimed three of the five singles matches contested. LCC was short a player and defaulted a singles and doubles point to MSU.
The Mustangs were led by senior
Mario Urban who collected a pair of points for MSU. Urban defeated the top-ranked player in the ITA's NJCAA rankings, Jair Assuncao at No. 1 singles 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. This was after he teamed with
Colby Meeks to win at No. 1 doubles 8-1 over the LCC team of Assuncao and Jaremie Castela.
MSU newcomer
Kacper Boborykin won at No. 3 singles over the third ranked NJCAA player, Leonard Ivic, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
At No. 4 singles,
Jarrod Liston defeated Dinmuchaim Yessemin 6-2, 6-4.
"We played well at the top of the lineup," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "We won two big singles matches in three and I'm very pleased at the team performance."
Laredo won at No. 2 doubles as Liston and
Tomas Grejtak lost to LCC's Luis Hernandez and Yessemin 9-8 in a tie breaker.
The Mustangs also fell at No. 2 singles with Castela beating
Rory de Boer 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 5 singles as Hernandez dowend Grejtak.
The Mustangs are back on the court Saturday in San Antonio to open Lone Star Conference action against Incarnate Word.
