Mustangs fall at Incarnate Word, 6-3

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Midwestern State won most of the tightly contested matches Saturday at the Mabry Tennis Center before dropping its Lone Star Conference opener 6-3 to Incarnate Word.
 
Sophomore Jarrod Liston combined with freshman Tomas Grejtek to upend the regionally ranked tandem of Chris Lawson and Leury Arias 9-8 and 7-3 in the tiebreaker, but Incarnate Word edged out the Mustangs in the other two doubles' position to take a 2-1 lead into singles' play.
 
Junior Colby Meeks outlasted Lawson 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 at No. 2 and Grejtek battled for a 7-6, 4-6, 12-11 win over UIW's Luke Trautmann at No. 6 to account for the Mustangs' winners.
 
Arias (ranked 14th regionally) edged MSU's Rory de Boer (17th regionally) at the No. 3 position 6-2, 7-5.
 
The Mustangs (ranked 5th regionally0 fell to 2-2 on the season and to 0-1 in league play, while UIW (ranked 8th regionally) climbed to 2-1 and 1-0.
 
Midwestern takes on St. Mary's (Texas) Friday afternoon back in San Antonio.
