GAME DAY: #9 Mustangs face big road challenge Saturday in Kingsville

No. 9 Midwestern State guns for its fourth straight and seventh win in its last eight games Saturday night against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Steinke Center.
 
A victory would also set up a showdown for first place against front running Tarleton State Monday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. or 25 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 1.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
 
Midwestern State is coming off of one of its best overall performances as the Mustangs thrashed red-hot Incarnate Word 77-53 Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
It was the most lopsided loss of the season for the Cardinals who had won seven of eight games and had beaten No.4 Tarleton State in San Antonio last Saturday.
 
It was the start of a crucial three games in six-stretch as the Mustangs now move on to their longest road trip of the season at Texas A&M-Kingsville before turning around for a rematch with rival Tarleton State Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Midwestern has been riding the consistent play of senior guard Michael Loyd of late.
 
The 6-1 Las Vegas product is averaging 12.9 points and dishing out 3.6 assists a game during LSC play has scored in double figures in eight consecutive game and 11 of his last 12.
 
Loyd had a superb all-around performance against UIW with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists in just 26 minutes of court time. He has connected on at least two treys in his last four games and has a 3-pointer in each of his last 11 outings.
 
Senior guard Keonte' Logan came alive to bury three 3-pointers to finish with a season-high 12 points while adding six assists and three rebounds Wednesday night against Incarnate Word.
 
Junior reserve guard DeJuan Plummer has matching lines of 11 points, three rebounds and an assist in home wins over Angelo State and Abilene Christian the last two times out. The Detroit, Mich. native has netted double figures in five games this season.
 
ABOUT THE JAVELINAS
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville has shaken out of a five-game skid by winning its last three contests as the Hoggies are coming off of an impressive win over Cameron Thursday night at Steinke Center.
 
The Javelinas (11-13, 6-9) are paced by junior Ashton Brown and 6-5 senior Robert Williams.
 
Brown, who averages 15.9 points and 3.3 assists, is an explosive scorer who has paced the Hoggies in scoring 11 times including season high of 32 points against St. Edward's (11/22) and St. Mary's (11/28).
 
The 5-10 guard from Randolph, N.Y. is coming off of performances of 29 and 25 points in last week's doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
Williams, a member of the Hoggies' national tournament team of 2008-09, adds 15 points and 6.9 rebounds with a season high 35 points and 10 rebounds in a 70-67 loss at St. Mary's on Jan. 23.
 
Eight different players have registered starts for TAMUK this season including Brown, Williams, junior guard Derryl Nash (9.2 points, 3.4 rebounds), junior guard Ryan Layssard (8.4 points, 2.3 rebounds), senior guard Marcus Ford (7.2 points, 3.9 rebounds), junior forward Reid Wallace (5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds) and junior forward Marshall Bonds III (5.4 points, 2.8 rebounds).
 
The Javelinas are 8-4 on their home floor this season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
 
Midwestern State meets Texas A&M-Kingsville for the 36th time on the hardwood Saturday night at Steinke Center.
 
The Mustangs own a commanding 24-11 edge in the series which dates back to the 1976-77 season.
 
MSU has claimed wins in its last eight meetings with the Hoggies which includes season sweeps in each of the last three years.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville last win in the series came by a 78-63 margin on Feb. 16, 2008 at Steinke Center.
 
Midwestern has a 9-6 mark against the Javelinas in Kingsville including wins in its last three trips to South Texas.
