Hot shooting Mustangs roll past Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Midwestern State didn't quite solve its turnover woes Saturday afternoon at Hampton Inn Court in Steinke Center.

But the hot shooting Mustangs connected at a 51.8-percent clip from the floor to come away with a 75-63 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.

MSU, which improved to 5-1 on the season and to 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum Wednesday night to take on rival West Texas A&M. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Mustangs committed 24 turnovers two days after committing 29 at Incarnate Word, but placed five players in double figures led by sophomore Andrea Carter, who connected on 8-of-14 shots to finish with 17 points and six rebounds.

Carter ignited an 8-1 run converted a pair of runners in the lane with just under 15 minutes to play in the opening half as MSU pushed the advantage to 19-10 on a Dianna Jones layup in transition with 12:55 remaining in the first half.

Jones capped another 7-1 run before intermission with a 3-pointer from the left wing give the Mustangs their largest lead of the half at 36-25.

But the Javelinas came out of the gate firing in the second half to claim a brief 42-40 edge on a Breanna Gonzalez 3-ball with 17:17 to play.

Once again, Carter provided the spark for the Mustangs converting a traditional three-point play before canning a short jumper to give MSU a lead it wouldn't relinquish again.

Junior guard Kirsti Degelia gave the Mustangs an early lift tallying nine of her 15 points in the opening half, while senior guard Ashley Rush buried a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 11 points off of the bench.

Dianna Jones finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with four steals while junior forward Skyler Warrick pitched in eight points.

Gonzalez connected on a three treys to lead Texas A&M-Kingsville, while dropped to 3-2 and 1-1. Kaitlyn Lowen completed a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
