Midwestern blows past Lady Buffs, 74-55

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's offense was in the flow while the defense made a routine out of flipping turnovers into points Wednesday night as the Mustangs rolled past West Texas A&M 74-55 in its Lone Star Conference home opener at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs improved to 6-1 on the season and to 2-1 in league plays. They enjoy a 10-day break before hosting Texas-Permian Basin on Sat., Dec. 15.

It was MSU's third consecutive win over the Lady Buffs under the dome.

Sophomore forward Skyler Warrick erupted out of a scoring slump to lead the Mustangs with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

She was just one beneficiary of great ball movement as the Mustangs registered assists on 22 of 28 made field goals led by sophomore point guard Dianna Jones, who dropped a double double with 10 points and 10 assists.

The Mustangs used a 14-2 run midway through the opening half capped by a Dianna Jones 3-ball from the right wing to give MSU a 22-12 lead with 10:06 to go until halftime.

Midwestern led by as many as 15 points in the opening before West Texas A&M closed the gap to 37-26 at intermission.

The Lady Buffs went on an extended 19-4 run at the start of the second half to close the margin to 44-39 when Lacee Logan converted a three-point play at the 14:27 mark of the second half.

But Warrick tallied nine points during the ensuing 14-2 run as the Mustangs pulled away for the win.

Junior guard Kirsti Degelia added 11 points while sophomore guard Shatoia Gober added 10 points and four assists. Sophomore forward Andrea Carter finished a point shy of notching her fourth double double of the season with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Chontiquah White poured in 21 points and Casey Land added 16 to lead West Texas A&M, which fell to 2-7 on the season and to 0-3 in league play.
