SAN ANTONIO -- Joslinn Douglass hit a charity toss with 3.8 seconds remaining to give Incarnate Word an 82-81 win in double overtime Thursday night in Lone Star Conference play at McDermott Center.
Â
The loss denied the Mustangs a shot at the best start in school history as MSU fell to 4-1 on the season and to 0-1 in league play.
Â
Midwestern overcame a bevy of turnovers and rallied back from a pair of seven-point second half deficits to force overtime.
Â
"We just gave away too many possessions," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "You just can't do positive things for your team with that many turnovers."
Â
But
Dianna Jones was whistled for a slight push when Douglass turned to go to the basket in a tie game with less than five seconds to go.
Â
Douglass hit the first of two free throws before Jones drove the length of the floor, but was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.
Â
The Mustangs committed 29 turnovers with 17 of them coming in the opening half, but the Cardinals were unable to pull away and led just 26-23 after MSU's
Ashley Rush buried a 3-pointer to close the opening half.
Â
Incarnate Word pushed the lead to 40-33 on a Katy Cooke jumper with 13:13 to play then led again by seven after Ashlyn Green hit a runner for a 45-38 UIW lead with 10:25 to play.
Â
But the Mustangs came charging back with a 9-0 run of their own as
Shatoia Gober converted a transition layup before Jones canned one of her three treys of the game.
Â
Gober hit another transition basket before Jones threaded a nice pass to Jennifer Sissel for a running jumper to give the Mustangs a 52-49 lead with 6:06 to play.
Â
The turnover bug returned at the end of regulation to aid a 6-0 Incarnate Word spurt as the Cardinals regained a 63-59 edge on a pair of transition conversions with 1:13 to play.
Â
But MSU retaliated with a turn-around jumper by
Andrea Carter and driving layup by Jones to force overtime.
Â
The Mustangs led by as many as six points in the first overtime period, but UIW knotted it up on Lauren McKinney's bank shot trey with 3.8 seconds to go.
Â
Dianna Jones led all scorers with 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Carter notched her fourth double double of the season with 16 points and 17 rebounds to go along with a block and two steals.
Â
Junior guard
Kirsti Degelia added 16 points including an 8-of-10 effort from the charity stripe.
Â
Cooke knocked down four 3-pointers to finish for 18 points for the Cardinals, while Ashlyn Green had 18 points and seven rebounds off of the bench.
Â
Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon at Steinke Center in Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
