Carver leads Mustangs past Abilene Christian, 90-82

ABILENE, Texas - Savannah Carver poured in 24 points to lead Midwestern State to a 90-82 win over Abilene Christian in Lone Star Conference play Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs have now won 11 of their last 12 games to improve to 15-4 on the season and to 11-2 in league play.

Carver connected 9-of-19 from the field and connected on three 3-pointers to provide the perimeter punch for the Mustangs, but the senior from Amarillo had plenty of help on the block.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson worked the block for 19 points and six rebounds while freshman Andrea Carter produced her best night as a collegian with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs controlled the pace throughout much of the first half on the strength of Carter's 11 first-half points as the freshman gave MSU its largest lead at 32-20 with 7:05 until intermission.

But inside-outside combination of Kelsey Smith and Mack Lankford helped the Wildcats come screaming back at the start of the second half.

Hamilton's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 14:48 to play culminated a 12-0 run and pull ACU to within one at 50-49 with 14:48 to play.

Hamilton would finish the game with 21 points on 7-of-21 shooting before fouling out in 32 minutes while Smith tallied a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mustangs answered swiftly with a Carver 3-pointer, a pair of free throws by Kirsti Degelia and a transition jumper by Karissa Lang to push the advantage back to 57-49.

MSU would re-establish a 12-point advantage on another Carter charity toss with 4:59 to play, but the pesky Wildcats wouldn't go away as ACU posted another 10-2 run to get within 83-78 with 1:18 to play.

But the Mustangs polished off a great night at the free throw line by hitting 7-of-8 over the final 1:04 to seal the victory. For the night, MSU went 27-of-34 from the charity stripe.

Midwestern returns to action Saturday night against Angelo State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

Abilene Christian slipped to 8-11 on the season and to 3-10 in league play.
