STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Midwestern State pretty well sealed off the 3-point arc Saturday night's Lone Star Conference contest against Tarleton State.
But the TexAnns proved to be too much in the paint coming away with a 77-62 win to end MSU's 10-game winning streak.
Midwestern falls to 14-4 on the season and to 10-2 in league play after suffering its first loss since falling to Angelo State on Dec. 12.
Tarleton's inside combination of Kiara Wright (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Shanae Lowrance (13 points, 5 rebounds) helped the TexAnns to a 54-26 total advantage in the paint and senior guard Shelby Adamson tallied many of her team-high 20 points and five assists at the end of the shot clock.
The Mustangs came out of the gates firing as
Cierra Thompson hit the first of her two 3-pointers as MSU scored seven consecutive points to take the early 7-2 lead with 17:39 to go in the first half.
Thompson would finish a board shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, but the TexAnns answered with an 18-2 run over the 4:03 to take a 20-9 advantage on an Adamson drive with 13:19 to go until overtime.
The Mustangs battled back to within 43-42 on Thompson's second trey of the ball game with 16:24 to go in the second half. That's as close as it would get.
MSU sophomore guard
Kirsti Degelia paced a group of starters in double figures for the Mustangs with 15 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw lie, while senior
Savannah Carver added 12 points and four rebounds and
Jazman Patterson was credited with 10 points and a pair of boards.
Freshman
Andrea Carter had a solid performance off of the bench with five points and eight rebounds as MSU controlled a 34-32 advantage on the glass.
Midwestern State hits the road to take on Abilene Christian Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Tarleton State improved to 15-5 on the season and to 12-0 in LSC play.
