Midwestern makes it 10 straight, cages Lions 74-58

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's Savannah Carver splashed in 20 points to lead the Mustangs to their 10th-straight win Wednesday night as MSU took a 74-58 decision over Texas A&M-Commerce at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Its the first 10-game streak for the Mustangs since the 2000-01 season as the team improved on its best start as a member of NCAA Division II at 14-3. Midwestern remains a game behind Tarleton State for the Lone Star Conference lead at 10-1.

The Mustangs challenge the TexAnns for the conference lead Saturday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

Carver combined with teammate Kirsti Degelia to give the Mustangs control of the game early as the two combined for each point of a 10-2 run to open a contest that MSU never trailed.

Texas A&M-Commerce closed to as close as a bucket midway through the half before MSU expanded the lead with another 13-2 lead near the end of the half as the Mustangs led 41-24 whn Lisa Hampton bombed in her lone trey of the game from the left corner with 1:29 to play.

The Lions, who were paced by Breanna Harris' 14-point, 9-rebound effort, battled back to close within nine points with 5:17 to play in the second half but could get no closer.

Midwestern took advantage of a big edge on free throw line by connecting on 30-of-42 shots from the charity stripe as Degelia went 11-for-12 to finish with 15 points and five rebounds while freshman Dianna Jones hit 7-of-10 to close with nine points.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson led MSU's efforts on the rebounds with five points and nine rebounds, while Jazman Patterson added six points and six rebounds.

Texas A&M-Commerce dropped its 13th-straight contest to fall to 1-16 on the season and to 0-11 in league play.
