LAWTON, Okla. - Senior
Savannah Carver poured in a career-high 27 points to lead Midwestern State to a 65-58 win over Cameron in Lone Star Conference action Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.
The Mustangs improved to 13-3 overall and to 9-1 in Lone Star Conference play while extending their longest winning streak since 2000-01 to nine games. MSU also snapped the Aggies' 8-game home court winning streak.
Carver kept Midwestern close early in the second half as she scored eight of the Mustangs' first 10 points of the half. The Amarillo native would finish the game shooting 8-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. She also fell a board short of her first double-double of the season with nine rebounds.
But it was freshman guard
Dianna Jones who gave MSU the nudge it needed late in the second half as the Waco Midway High product connected on a 3-pointer and converted a steal into a layup as part of a 12-2 run as the Mustangs worked a 47-46 deficit into a 58-49 lead on Jones' layup with 6:17 to play.
Midwestern wore down the Aggies who managed to shoot 26.7-percent in the second half as the Mustangs limited Cameron leading scorer Julie Paunovic to seven points on 3-of-12 shooting.
Carver was the only MSU player to score in double figures, but the Mustangs also got solid contributions from senior
Jazman Patterson (9 points, 6 rebounds), Jones (7 points, 6 rebounds) and senior
Cierra Thompson (6 points, 6 rebounds).
Midwestern is enjoying is best start since the 2002-03 was 12-3 and have won 12 of the last 13 for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
The Mustangs play host to Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
