Thomas' tip-in lifts No. 13 MSU past Cameron, 82-80

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Darrick Thomas' tip-in with 0.8 seconds remaining lifted No. 13 Midwestern State to an 82-80 win over Cameron Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs matched the best start in school history at 14-1 while improving to 7-1 in Lone Star Conference play, but had to fight the Aggies for the entire 40 minutes.

The teams exchanged the lead 16 times and the score was tied on 13 more occasions as Cameron was unable hold on to a 65-61 lead with 5:23 to play.

The Mustangs rallied with three quick points from Keonte' Logan and Thomas Colbert followed a David Terrell missed layup with a tipin to give the Mustangs their first lead since early in the half at 66-65.

But Cameron kept forcing the issues with hard drives to the paint before the Mustangs got a little breathing room with consecutive treys by Michael Loyd to take a 3-point lead at 72-69 with 3:05 to go.

The ball bounced the Aggies' way in the final 60 seconds of the game as Desmond Henry connected on a pair of true charity tosses with 7.2 seconds to play to knot the game at 80-80.

Then Loyd dribbled the length of the floor, but his layup attempt popped out of the bucket. Thomas snagged the board and layed it back in to secure victory.

Loyd paced the Mustangs with 19 points to go along with four points and two assists and was joined in double figures by Colbert (13 points, 7 rebounds), JaMichael Rivers (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and DeJuan Plummer (13 points).

Senior guard Milton Garner had 28 points to lead Cameron which had its eight-game winning streak snapped. The Aggies moved to 10-4 on the season and to 7-2 in the LSC.

The teams square off again Saturday at Aggie Gym in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
