LAWTON, Okla. - Brothers Michael and
Kevin Loyd combined for 25 points to lead No. 13 Midwestern State to a 66-51 rout of Cameron Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.
The win gave the Mustangs as a series sweep of CU in the Red River Rivalry as MSU improved to 15-1 on the season and to 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Aggies, who were riding hight with an eight-game winning streak coming into the week, fell to 10-5 on the season and to 7-3 in league play.
Cameron got the best of play in the early going surging out to a 19-10 lead when Milton Garner banged in his first 3-pointer of the game with 6:48 to go in the opening half.
But Garner, who enjoyed a 28-point performance earlier in the week against the Mustangs, would be limited to 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting the rest of the way as the MSU would take over.
The field goal as the last in the first half for Cameron as Midwestern used defensive might to construct a 15-2 lead and take a 25-21 edge into the intermission after
DeJuan Plummer beat the buzzer with a runner in the lane.
Cameron would claw back to within a point twice in the second half at 29-28 on a pair of Garner free throws at the 16:19 mark and to within 38-37 on a Garner jumper with 11:21 to play.
But
Kevin Loyd used a pair of 3-pointers to keep the Mustangs ahead before Plummer connected on a pair of free throws and was credited with a transition bucket via basket interference to start a 7-0 run with 7:00 to play as the Mustangs outscored the Aggies 16-4 over the final six minutes of the contest.
Senior forward
David Terrell added 13 points and nine rebounds for MSU, while
Thomas Colbert had six points and 11 rebounds and Plummer pitched in nine points off of the bench.
Desmond Henry added 13 points and eight rebounds to join Garner as the only CU players in double figures.
Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
