GAME DAY: Mustangs hit the road looking for seventh straight against Zias

Midwestern State hits the road for the first time in a month when the Mustangs travel to Portales, N.M., to face the Eastern New Mexico Zias in Lone Star Conference play at Greyhound Arena.

MSU is 10-3 overall, 6-1 in LSC action after an impressive 88-76 win over West Texas A&M on Wednesday night.  Eastern New Mexico is 4-10 overall, 2-6 in the LSC after falling at Cameron 59-47 on Wednesday.

Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. Central time (2:00 p.m. Mountain).

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State is riding its first six-game winning streak in eight years after the 88-76 win over West Texas A&M.  It also marks winning nine of the last 10 games for the Mustangs best start since a 12-2 opening of the 2003-04 season.

MSU boasts three double-figure scorers this season led by senior guard Savannah Carver.

The Amarillo native ranks amongst LSC leaders with 14.9 points per game while connecting on 1.5 3-pointers a contest.

Sophomore guard Kirsti Degelia scores 11.1 points a contest, while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and adds 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Freshman Dianna Jones has been a Mustangs' spark plug, averaging 11.0 points a game.  She is connecting on a 1.2 treys an outing and leads the Lone Star Conference in 3-point percentage by nailing 50.0 percent (13-26). The Waco Midway High product pitches in 2.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson adds 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds , while frosh guard Shatoia Gober adds 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a contest.

MSU leads the Lone Star Conference averaging 77.0 points and is third in rebounding with 41.2 a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 67.3 points a contest.

ABOUT THE ZIAS

Eastern New Mexico stands 4-10 overal, 2-6 in the LSC and has now split its last four games after suffering a four-game losing streak.

The Zias are paced by senior Precious Herrin who leads the team and the Lone Star Conference in scoring with 18.0 points a game and field goal percentage at 56.1 percent (105-187), then adds 6.4 rebounds an outing.

Senior Kiara Tate contributes 11.4 points a game, while sophomore Hannah Altheide tallies 8.1 points an outing.

The Zias are averaging 63.5 points a game, while allowing 69.9 a contest.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico meet for the 33rd time on Saturday when they meet at Greyhound Arena.

MSU holds a 17-15 advantage in the series, with ENMU holding a 9-7 series edge in Portales.

The Mustangs swept both contest last season after the Zias swept the series in 2010.  MSU defeated ENMU 68-67 on Feb. 9, 2011 in Portales, after beating the Zias 74-62 on Jan. 19, 2011 at Ligon Coliseum.

The Zias last defeated MSU 51-49 on Feb. 13, 2010 in Wichita Falls.
