ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
No. 11 Midwestern State is off to its second best start in school history and looks to maintain its perfect run with a win over Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
For just the third time in school history, MSU has won its first 12 games at the start of the season. And that has meant big things for Midwestern squads.
The 1973-74 team opened with a 12-0 mark before advancing to the NAIA national championship game while the 2009-10 squad rolled off a school record 14-0 start before moving on to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history.
Senior guard
Michael Loyd exploded for 13 of his game-high 17 points during a 20-2 second half run to lift the Mustangs to an 80-61 win over Central Oklahoma last Thursday at Hamilton Fieldhouse.
The senior from Las Vegas converted a traditional three-point play on a hanging jumper in transition then scored 10 consecutive points fueled by a pair of 3-pointers as the Mustangs turned a 5-point deficit into a 57-44 lead in less than four minutes.
Junior forward
Anthony Harris delivered his fourth consecutive double-figure outing with 11 points and three rebounds before exiting the game early in the second half.
Senior forward
David Terrell notched third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds in MSU's 80-61 win over Central Oklahoma.
ABOUT THE BUFFS
West Texas A&M had its nine-game winning streak snapped 59-56 at Tarleton State Saturday night at Wisdom Gym.
The loss dropped the Buffs to 11-2 on the season as WT lost for the first time since falling 53-50 to Texas A&M International on Oct. 18 in Odessa.
West Texas A&M is paced by a pair of newcomers in junior guard Kennon Washington and junior forward Donald Sims.
Washington, a 6-4 transfer from Faulkner State CC (Ala.), scores 15.2 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field to go along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game this season. He has led the Buffs in scoring six times this season including season highs of 24 points against Incarnate Word (12/1) and Texas A&M-Commerce (1/4).
Sims, a 6-5 transfer from South Carolina-Salkehatchie, is WT's top inside threat averaging 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He has led WT in scoring in 11 of 13 games while posting an LSC-best five double-doubles.
Washington and Sims are two of four Buffs logging 30-or-more minutes of floor time joining senior guard Lionel Foster (7.9 points, 7.0 assists) and senior guard David Henderson (5.0 points, 1.9 rebounds).
Senior forward Courtney Carr (9.8 points, 5.6 rebounds) and freshman guard Tez Dumars (7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds) are the only other WT players averaging 20-or-more minutes. Dumars connected for six of his 17 3-pointers this season Saturday night at Tarleton State.
West Texas A&M leads the conference with a .508 team field goal percentage, but is last in the league with a free throw percentage of .576.
WT and MSU are the top two rebounding squads in the Lone Star Conference.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State battles West Texas A&M for the 57th time on the hardwood Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
West Texas A&M owns a 33-23 edge in the series which dates back to the 1947-48 season, but MSU is 12-5 all time against the Buffs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum where the Mustangs have won each of the last four games.
WT has won twice under the dome since the start of the 2003-04 season and both of those victories have come in overtime.
The home team has won the last six games in the series as the teams have split the regular season series in each of the last three years.
