Game Day: No. 22 Mustangs put unbeaten record on line at Incarnate Word

Setting the Stage

The No. 22 Midwestern State Mustangs put their 3-0 record on the line against the Incarnate Word Cardinals.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

For the Record

The Mustangs are 3-0, 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference, entering the game after beating then 16th ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville 44-38 last Saturday in MSU's home opener at Memorial Stadium.  The Mustangs are ranked 22nd this week in the AFCA Division II Football Poll.

Incarnate Word sports a 1-3 season record, 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play after dropping a 52-7 decision at then No. 21 West Texas A&M in last Saturday night.

Who's Hot

Midwestern State jumped out on top of Texas A&M-Kingsville last week and held on for the 44-38 victory.

MSU continued it powerful ground game as the "New Pony Express" rolled up 292 yards against the Javelinas, the most A&M-Kingsville had allowed since 2007.

Sophomore Keidrick Jackson is the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week and the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 160 yards on 18 carries (8.9 per carry) with three touchdowns to go with his team-leading four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown against the Hoggies.  He became the first MSU player to score four touchdowns in consecutive games.  He leads the Lone Star Conference and is 24th nationally in rushing with 101.3 yards a game, and leads the LSC and is second nationally in scoring averaging 18.0 points a contest. 

He leads a group of Mustangs who hold four of the top 10 rushing spots in the LSC.

Senior Lester Bush picked up 92 yards against TAMUK and is fifth in the conference with 66.7 yards a game.

Junior quarterback Brandon Kelsey had his best outing thus far against TAMUK, completing 15-of-23 passes for 220 yards with a 45-yard touchdown to Jackson (the longest pass play of the season) and two interceptions.  He also rushed for 33 yards.  Kelsey's averaing 246.3 yards of total offense a game, including collecting 56.3 yards rushing a game (sixth in the LSC).

Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin saw limited action against TAMUK after leading all rushers in the LSFF with 106 yards and broke an 87-yard touchdown run in the waneing seconds of the contest for MSU.  He's 10th in the LSC with a 48.3 yard average.

Senior David Little has hauled in 13 of Kelsey's passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.  Little continues his climb up the career receiving charts, now ranking second in receptions with 124.  Little is also fourth with 1,668 career receiving yards and fourth in career touchdown receptions with15.

Senior linebacker Ty Duncan, the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, continues to lead the tackle chart with 21 stops.

Sophomore Neiko Conway has two pass interceptions to lead the team this season, with a total of five in his 12 career games at MSU.

The MSU defense allows 339.0 total yards a game, but is second in the LSC and 32nd nationally in scoring defense at 18.3 points given up a contest.

Incarnate Word junior running back Trent Rios is second in the LSC in rushing, averaging 96.5 yards an outing to rank 32nd nationally.  He accounts for 70 percent of the Cardinals rushing and 39 percent of the Cards offensive output.

The Cardinals lead the LSC with eight interceptions in four games.  Sophomore safety Devin Haywood leads the LSC and is second nationally with four interceptions (1.0 per game) with 52 return yards.  Still, UIW is ninth in the LSC and 144th nationally in Pass Efficiency Defense with a 160.91 rating.

Sophomore linebacker Juan Asencio leads the UIW tackle chart with 32 stops in four games.

conference leading rushing defense that has only given up 47.3 yards a game.  Sanders has 14 tackles on the season and over 200 for his career.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Incarnate Word are meeting for the third time when they clash at Benson Stadium.  The Mustangs won 49-7 in 2009 in the Cardinals first meeting with a Lone Star Conference team.  MSU withstood a UIW comeback to win 38-31 in overtime in 2010. 

Quick Hits

  • This is the first Lone Star Conference game televised live by the Time Warner Cable's Texas Channel.  MSU has a long-standing relationship with Time Warner Cable in Wichita Falls.
  • The Mustangs returned to the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 this week at No. 22.  MSU was in the Top 25 for 22 straight reporting periods before dropping to receiving votes the last five polls before this week.
  • Midwestern State has scored on all 16 of it's appearances in the red zone this season, scoring 15 touchdowns and one field goal.
