WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The fifth annual Midwestern State Athletics Welcome Back Dinner is Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Comanche Suites in the Clark Student Center.
Former Dallas Cowboys star linebacker D.D. Lewis is the guest speaker for the event that kicks off the 2011-12 season.
Lewis, the co-captain of Cowboys defense in 1977 and 1978, wore the silver and blue in a team record 27 playoff games including nine NFC Championship Games. He is one of only eight NFL player to have appeared in five Super Bowls.
Never selected to a Pro Bowl or an All-Pro squad, Lewis was called “the most underrated player” by his head coach Tom Landry.
He was named the Cowboys “Most Popular Player” in 1981 and was given the Bart Starr Meritorious Award that year. He was chosen to the Cowboys Silver Anniversary team in 1984.
It was Lewis who stated in 1982 that “Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play.”
Lewis was an All-American and two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection at Mississippi State, he was drafted in the sixth round by the Cowboys in 1968. He played 13 seasons for Dallas, missing the 1969 season because of military service.
Lewis was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
