EDMOND, Okla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs dropped tough matches to a pair of top 6 NAIA squads as both the men and women lost on the road at Oklahoma Christian Friday.
The No. 31 men fell to fifth-ranked OCU 6-3, while the No. 30 women fell to the sixth-ranked Eagles 5-4.
The MSU men swept all three doubles matches, including the nationally-ranked battle at No. 1. MSU's
Vjekoslav Stipanic and
Luke Joyce, ranked 37th in NCAA Division II, beat the NAIA's fifth-ranked team of Martin Poboril and Pier Pieracciani 8-4.
But the Eagles, who sported a lineup featuring the five of the top 45 singles players in the NAIA, swept the Mustangs to win the match.
The MSU women picked up a pair of wins in doubles. The women's nationally-ranked match went to MSU as well. Division II's 11th ranked team of Rozike van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels beat the NAIA's eight-ranked team of Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova 9-7.
Abbie Lewis and
Leah Roberts each won two points. As the No. 2 double team, the paired to beat Maryfer Abreu Roman and Marta Contel Miranzo 8-2. In singles, Lewis won at No. 3 over Andreea Constantinescu 6-3, 6-2, and Roberts claimed No. 4 over Roman 6-2, 6-3.
The Mustangs conclude Lone Star Conference play on Tuesday in Lawton against Cameron in men's and women's action starting at 2 p.m.
