WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It was the lone senior for Midwestern State that decided Thursday afternoon's Lone Star Conference match for the Mustangs against Incarnate Word.
Ashley Huse, a senior from Amarillo playing in her final regular season home match, won the last match on the court defeating Francesca Bassoo 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 to give the Mustangs a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.
"I am proud of the way we fought it out today," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "We willed our way to some points today."
The 30th ranked Mustangs (14-4, 6-1) struggled through doubles play against 43rd ranked UIW (7-8, 1-4), winning just one point at No. 2 when
Abbie Lewis and
Leah Roberts beat Alex Adams and Casey Bulls 8-3.
But the Mustangs answered in singles. Lewis quickly dispatched Adams at No. 4 6-1, 6-1 and
Alex Odell-Michels beat Brianda Navarro 6-4, 6-1.
The tide turned when Rozike van Rensburg battled through three sets to take the No. 1 singles point with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over Audrey Hernandez. Van Rensburg led a 5-0 lead in the third set slip away to a tiebreak at 6-6.
After losing the first two points in the tiebreaker, van Rensburg collected seven straight points to beat Hernandez and win the match.
The Mustangs don't have much time to enjoy the win, as they hit the road Friday for a non-conference match at Oklahoma Christian, with the first serve at 2 p.m.
