OKLAHOMA CITY – The Midwestern State Mustangs advanced to the Lone Star Conference semifinals Friday morning with a 6-1 victory over Incarnate Word at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
The second-seeded Mustangs (15-7) advance to meet sixth-seeded Tarleton State at 3:30 Friday afternoon. The TexAnns defeated third-seeded Central Oklahoma 5-4 in quarterfinal play.
MSU was led at the top of the lineup by All-Lone Star Conference performers Rozike van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels. The 37th ranked doubles pair ripped the UIW No. 1 team of Audrey Hernandez and Maggae Doney 8-3.
Odell-Michels took out Brianda Navarro 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, however it wasn't so easy at No. 1. Van Rensburg went the distance with Hernandez, winning 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 to claim the match as well.
The Mustangs also got a doubles win from the No. 2 team of
Leah Roberts and
Abbie Lewis with an 8-4 triumph over Casey Bulls and Alex Adams.
Lewis then beat Bulls 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 3, while Roberts downed Adams 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
UIW got its only point when Navarro and Lorena Robolledo beat
Lindsey Holcomb and
Ashley Huse at No. 3 doubles 8-3.
The match was halted with two singles competitions on the court.
In other quarterfinal action, top-seeded Abilene Christian defeated eighth-seeded Southeastern Oklahoma State 5-0 and fourth-seeded Cameron beat fifth-seeded Northeastern State 5-3. ACU and Cameron meet on Friday afternoon as well.
The championship match features the semifinal winners Saturday morning at 9:30.
