To The Title Match! No. 30 Mustangs beat Tarleton State 5-2 in LSC Semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Midwestern State Mustangs advanced to Saturday's Lone Star Conference Championship Match with Friday evening's 5-2 victory over Tarleton State in the LSC Semifinals.

The 30th ranked and second-seeded Mustangs (17-7) used the bottom of the singles lineup to take the victory over the sixth-seeded TexAnns (8-9) at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Mustangs opened with a 2-1 advantage after doubles. The top duo of Rozike van Rensburg and Alex Odell-Michels downed Alicia Perez and Mariana Freitas 8-3. The No. 3 team of Linsdey Holcomb and Ashley Huse delivered an 8-1 triumph over TSU's Silvia Nieva and Kayla Deathrage.

Then in singles it was Leah Roberts joining Holcomb and Huse to sweep the four-through-six positions and the match.

"Leah Roberts did a great job today," said MSU Coach Scott Linn. "We really needed to win at No. 4 singles and she came through. She got to some tough balls. She's a competitor."

Roberts ripped Melanie Barnes 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, while Holcomb blasted Nieva 6-1, 6-1. Huse ended the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 against Deathrage.

The TexAnns only singles win was at No. 3 where Freitas beat Abbie Lewis 6-2, 6-1.

The Nos. 1 and 2 singles were pulled off the court with the Mustangs victory.

"I'm so proud of the way we played today," said Linn. "They are warriors. They've overcome a lot this season, and at the end of the day they wanted to win and they did."

The Mustangs setup the 1-2 showdown against top-seeded Abilene Christian. ACU handled fourth-seeded Cameron 5-0 in the other semifinal.

The LSC Championship Match is set for Saturday morning at 9:30.
