FORT WORTH - Celebrating one senior night just wasn't enough for Midwestern State's lone upperclassman.
Ashley Huse clinched a win for the Mustangs during their Senior Day two weeks ago, and then spoiled a sweep for the home standing Horned Frogs Wednesday night as TCU came away with a 5-1 victory at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Amarillo native fought back to split sets against sophomore Molly Welsh at 3-6, 7-6 then scrapped for a 10-5 tiebreaker victory at No. 5 singles.
TCU took the other four singles matches in straight sets as Olivia Smith defeated Rozike van Rensburg 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; Fredrica Denti beat
Alex Odell-Michels 6-1; 6-1 at No. 2 and Shalini Sahoo rolled
Leah Roberts 6-2, 6-0 and Maria Babanova beat
Lindsey Holcomb 6-2, 6-4.
The Horned Frogs (11-10) also claimed both doubles decisions as Babanova and Katariina Tuohimaa beat Odell-Michels/van Rensburg 8-3 at No. 1 and Idunn Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino beat Holcomb and Huse 8-0 at No. 2.
Midwestern (15-7) competed with five players as freshman
Abbie Lewis was held out due to injury. The Mustangs were forced to forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The Mustangs open Lone Star Conference Championship tournament play Friday morning at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center as the No. 2 seed.
MSU battles Incarnate Word in the opening round with first service set for 9:30 a.m. With a win, the Mustangs face the winner of the Central Oklahoma/Tarleton State matchup Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
