Gutierrez shuts down Texas A&M-Kingsville

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Kristina Gutierrez came within a strike of finishing off her second no-hitter of the season and had to settle for a two-hit shutout as No. 3 Midwestern State battled Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at Texas Bank Sports Complex.

Gutierrez needed just 87 pitches to match a season high with 14 strikeouts and improve to 14-1 while the Mustangs (33-3) improved their current winning streak to six games.

Texas A&M-Kingsville's Rose Stubbs reached on an error to leadoff the game, stole second base and advanced to the third on Roxanne Rodriguez's fly out to right field.

But Gutierrez caught fellow starting pitcher Amanda Arriaga looking to strang Stubbs at first. That would be the last Javelina runner to reach the base until the seventh inning.

That was only afer Gutierrez fanned Kaycee Bryan, got Rodriguez to fly out to left field and worked a 1-2 count for the would-be final out of the game before Arriaga stroked a clean single to center field.

Yvette Berlanga followed with a single through the right side of the infield, but Gutierrez ended the threat by striking out Taylor Manguia for the final out of the game.

The Mustangs struck for the only two runs of the contest in the sixth inning against Arriagao, who fell to 12-13 despite limiting MSU to two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in a six inning complete game.

Senior shortstop McKenzie Sickler led off the frame by lacing a double off of the right-center field fence and scored on Elena Bennett's infield single. Bennett eventually scored on Kim Jerrick's sacrifice fly to left field to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead going into the final frame.

Bennett and Megan Chartier accounted for two-hits to account for the bulk of MSU's 6-hit attack.

Texas A&M-Kingsville fell to 22-17.
