Tanner throws blanks at No. 15 West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Midwestern State's Brittney Tanner has stepped her game up to the next level.

That has clearly been on display at the Lone Star Conference Crossover this weekend at Texas Bank Sports Complex.

For the second-straight day, the senior from Burkburnett shut down a nationally ranked club and for another consecutive game Tanner delivered a two-hit shutout as the No. 3-ranked Mustangs came away with a 2-0 win over No. 15 West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Tanner became the first pitcher in the LSC to win 20 games at 20-2 by claiming a victory in her seventh straight start. She notched 11 strikeouts and walked just two against the Lady Buffs.

The right-hander has been unbeatable since taking her last loss by a 3-2 count on March 11 at Southeastern Oklahoma. Since, Tanner is 7-0 with a save while allowing just two runs - both solo homers - on 17 hits in 47 innings. She has notched 64 strikeouts and walked 11 during the hot stretch.

It was Tanner's LSC-best 10th shutout of the season as she improved her ERA to a league leading 0.97, but had to shake her way out of jams by stranding a runner on third base three times against the Lady Buffs.

Tanner hit Kasey Henderson's big elbow pad in the first inning to allow the senior outfielder on base who would steal second and third, but Tanner fanned the next two batters to halt the rally.

Kimberly Myles launched a leadoff double over MSU right fielder Megan Chartier's head, but was stranded at third after a sacrifice bunt, a strikeout swinging and Henderson failed attempt in a squeeze bunt that resulted in a foul out to third base to again end the threat.

LeComte would lead off the sixth inning with a double through the left side of the MIdwestern infield and advanced to third on Kaitlyn Witte's flyout to right field, but another failed squeeze attempt preceeded Tanner's strikeout of Megan Brown to end yet another solid WT opportunity.

The Mustangs struggled early against West Texas A&M starter Marci Womack as the drop-ball specialist didn't allow a hit until Mallory Mooney drilled a one-out single to left field in the fourth inning.

MSU wouldn't mount a rally until the next inning as Tanner drilled a single to center field and was lifted for pinch runner Nicki Duff.

Duff moved to second on Alyson Reynolds' two-strike sacrifice bunt before Carey Campbell reached on an error.

Both runners moved into scoring position on McKenzie Sickler's groundout to third then scored on Elena Bennett's infield single to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the sixth.

Freshman catcher Kim Jerrick drilled her ninth homer of the season over the center field fence in the sixth inning to give the Mustangs insurance.

Tanner also paced MSU's 6-hit attack by going 2-for-3.

Womack (12-4) took the loss for the Lady Buffs allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Midwestern State closes the LSC Crossover with games against Texas Woman's University and Tarleton State Sunday at San Angelo Community Field at the Texas Bank Sports Complex. First pitch is set for noon and 2 p.m., respectively.

West Texas A&M slipped to 26-10 on the season.
