AUSTIN, Texas – The 31st-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs ran into a buzz saw Friday afternoon as the sixth ranked St. Edward's Hilltoppers clobbered the Mustangs 5-0.
The Hilltoppers, who sported the South Central region's No. 1 ranking, advanced to 10-9 on the season with the win, while the Mustangs fell to 13-5 on the season.
Things did not go right from the start for MSU, dropping all three doubles matches.
St. Ed's Ned Boone and Mick Walter, ranked 28th nationally, downed the Mustangs No. 1 doubles pair of
Vjekoslav Stipanic and
Luke Joyce 8-5, the same score that the Mustangs No. 2 pair
Mario Urban and
Bo Zaputovic fell to Ryan Wiggins and Pedro Bronstrap. The Hilltoppers completed the sweep when Alex Bueno and James Rogers beat
Chad Meeks and
Jarrod Liston at No. 3, 8-4.
The singles clinched the match which was stopped after it was decided. First, 49th ranked Walter handed Urban a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at No. 2. Then St. Ed's ended the match with Rogers 6-3, 6-4 win over Tiago Vilahrino at No. 5.
The Mustangs held leads in two of the three unfinished matches. Stipanic led 48th ranked Boone 7-6, 3-2 at No. 1 when the match was pulled, while Zaputovic led Bronstrup 6-3, 4-5 at No. 4. SEU's Wiggins led Joyce 2-1 in a third set after splitting at 6-3, 3-6 when the match was called.
The MSU men conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon in Abilene when they face Texas Lutheran at Hardin-Simmons. The MSU women also play against TLU, with both matches starting at 3 p.m.
