SAN ANGELO, Texas - No. 3 Midwestern State used the long ball to crush Abilene Christian 9-2 in its second game of the Lone Star Conference Crossover Friday afternoon at Texas Bank Sports Complex.
The Mustangs (32-3) have now won five straight games, 10 of the last 11 and 23 of the last 25 and will face Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 15 West Texas A&M on Bug Express Field Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
Amanda Potysman crushed her fifth homer of the season - a three-run shot - and
Carey Campbell lifted a two-run blast - her third of the season - down the left-field line to key a 6-run first inning for the Mustangs.
Abilene Christian countered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-run single Erin Gilliland to close within 6-2, but MSU starter
Kristina Gutierrez righted the ship to finisn strong with five shutout frames.
The senior from Pearland improved to 13-1 on the season allowing two runs on six hits while notching five strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.
The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the third inning with two coming by the unearned variety as
McKenzie Sickler drove in one on a fielder's choice while two more were added via one of four ACU fielding errors during the game.
Senior
Alyson Reynolds paced a six-hit MSU attack by going 2-for-4.
ACU starter Shelby Hall took the loss for the Wildcats to fall to 8-8. She allowed six runs - three earned - on four hits and last just 2/3 of an inning.
The Wildcats fell to 20-16.
