Tanner, No. 3 Mustangs ring 'Belles, 8-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Big players have a way of showing up big in big games.

Midwestern State's Brittney Tanner certainly proved her All-America mettle by weaving her fourth shutout in her last five starts as the 3rd-ranked Mustangs rolled to an 8-0 run-rule win over No. 2 Angelo State Friday afternoon at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament at Texas Bank Sports Complex.

The reigning LSC North Pitcher of the Week, who improved to 19-2 on the season, allowed back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first inning then held the heavy hitting Rambelles hitless over the next five innings while nothing seven strikeouts to just one walk.

It was Tanner's league leading ninth shutout of the season. A total that ranks second in all of NCAA Division II.

Tanner had plenty of support in the opening win as the Mustangs pushed across an unearned run in the first inning before Carey Campbell ignited a five-run, six-hit rally with two outs in the top of thef fourth.

Campbell's third double of the season chased Tanner in all the way from first base before the Mustangs touched up ASU starter Mary Kate McKay with three consecutive singles including run-scoring knocks by McKenzie Sickler and Nicki Duff.

Junior third baseman Mallory Mooney delivered the knockout blow to McKay and the Rambelles with a two-run double down to right field to push the MSU advantage to 6-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

McKay, who fell to 10-2, was lit up for six runs - five earned - on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Midwestern tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Kim Jerrick's RBI single to left field scored Megan Chartier from first base then the ball was mishandle allowing the eight run to score to end the game in a run rule.

The Mustangs continue play at the LSC Crossover later this afternoon against Abilene Christian. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
