Mustangs keep rolling, blank Golden Suns and Cards to move to 22-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State flexed its pitching might by finishing off a sweep of the Holiday at the Falls Invitational at Mustangs Park.

Senior pitchers Brittney Tanner and Kristina Gutierrez pitched the Mustangs 10th and 11th shutouts of the season as MSU roll to a 4-0 win over Arkansas Tech and a 5-0 victory against Incarnate Word.

Tanner permitted just a two-out, fourth inning single to ATU's Hayley Hudson to spin her second 1-hit shutout of the weekend. The Burkburnett High product notched eight strikeouts to improve to 13-1 on the season.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the strength of freshman catcher Kim Jerrick's two-run double to the left field gap in the first inning then added an unearned run after Courtney Bingham drilled a one-out triple to right field and scored courtesy of a Golden Suns' error in the third inning.

Tanner tacked on a fourth run with her second homer of the season - a scalded line drive over the left field fence.

Gutierrez was just as dominating in the second game weaving her sixth shutout of the season and limited Incarnate Word to two hits. The senior right-hander fanned 11 and walked two to to go 9-0 on the season.

The Pearland native got an abundance of support as Alyson Reynolds belted her third homer of the season in the fourth inning as the three-run blast gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

Midwestern added two more in the fifth courtesy of Mallory Mooney's two-run single through the left side of the infield.

Sophomore outfielder Elena Bennett extended her program record hitting streak to 20 games by going 1-for-3 against Arkansas Tech and 2-for-3 versus Incarnate Word

The Mustangs extended the current winning streak to 13 games while improving their best start to 22-1.

MSU opens Lone Star Conference North Division play next Friday at Southeastern Oklahoma.
