DURANT, Okla. - A two-strike, two-out seeing eye roller through the infield was enough to do in No. 9 Midwestern State and its 13-game winning streak Friday afternoon at SOSU Field.
Katie Campbell's roller which barely had enough steam to catch the outfield grass found space between the first and second baseman to plate two runs to lift Southeastern Oklahoma State to a 3-2 Lone Star Conference North Division opening win.
The loss was just the second of the season for the Mustangs, who fell to 22-2 on the season.
The teams complete the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at SOSU Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead on
Mallory Mooney's fifth homer of the season - a solo blast to left field - in the top of the fourth inning.
Southeastern then struck for two runs and three of its four total hits for the game in the bottom of the inning.
MSU starter
Brittney Tanner fanned Christa Johnson for the second out of the frame before hitting a batter to load the bases with two outs for Campbell.
Campbell worked the count to 2-2 before rolling a perfectly placed roller up the middle to give the Storm a 2-1 lead.
Southeastern pushed the advantage to 3-1 on Cassy Tice's solo shot in the fifth inning.
Tanner was saddled with the loss to fall to 13-2 on the season. The Burkburnett native allowed three earned run on four hits while striking out 10 and walking none.
Midwestern clawed to within a run on
Kim Jerrick's solo homer to left field in the seventh inning, but could pull no closer.
Sophomore outfielder
Elena Bennett had her school record 20-game hitting streak fall by the wayside by going 0-for-3.
Southeastern Oklahoma improved to 18-10.
