LUBBOCK, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs battled at all positions, but the Big 12 Conference's Texas Tech Red Raiders were too much as they claimed a 7-0 victory on Friday.
The Raiders (7-3) won all nine matches in the event that scored each singles match and grouped the doubles as one point. MSU fell to 4-2 on the year.
"Even though the scores aren't indicative, the team played well," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "We are much better as a team than we were at the start of the season."
The loss snapped the Mustangs three match winning streak.
MSU was paced by the play of Wichita Falls freshman
Abbie Lewis. Playing at no. 4 singles, Lewis battled Sandra Dynka but fell 7-6 in the first set and dropped the second 6-3. She then teamed with
Leah Roberts against Tech's Elizabeth Ulathorne and Haley Fournier at no. 2 doubles, but fell to the Tech duo 8-6.
"Abbie played a solid match, but she was just a little short," Linn said.
The Mustangs were also close at no. 3 doubles, as
Lindsey Holcomb and
Ashley Huse fell to Lorena Aviles and Dynka 8-5. MSU'S Rozike van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels dropped the no. 1 doubles match to Caroline Starck and Nikki Sanders 8-2.
"We were right there in doubles," Linn stated. "We were in a position to win but just didn't get it done."
In other singles action Ulathorne defeated van Rensburg 6-1, 6-2, Starck downed Odell-Michels 6-1, 6-0, and Fornier beat Roberts 6-0, 6-2. Sanders won over Holcomb 6-2, 6-2 and Aviles shut out Huse 6-0, 6-0.
The Mustangs return to the courts on Saturday as both the women and men host McMurry. First serve is 10 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Center.
