Game Day: No. 3 Mustangs set to host MSU Invitational #2

Setting the Stage

No. 3 Midwestern State plays host to the MSU Invitational #2 Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Mustangs Park.

The five-team, 10-game tournament kicks off with three games on Friday, four games on Saturday and three more on Sunday.

The Mustangs play Central Missouri and St. Mary's at noon and 4 p.m. on Friday then close the tournament with games against Delta State and St. Edward's Sunday at Noon and 2 p.m., respectively.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State moved ahead two spots in the National Fast-pitch Coaches' Association Division II Top 25 to match its highest national ranking in program history at No. 3.

The Mustangs also reached No. 3 prior to the Lone Star Conference Championships last season before entering the postseason with a No. 5 ranking.

MSU has won 18 of its last 19 games and is led by senior pitcher Brittney Tanner.

The 2011 LSC North Preseason Pitcher of the Year carries a 16-2 record while posting a 1.14 ERA. Tanner has permitted 18 earned runs on 69 hits in 110 2/3 innings of work while posting 159 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Fellow senior hurler Kristina Gutierrez has also been superb in the circle.

The two-time LSC North Pitcher of the Week boasts a perfect 11-0 mark while allowing 15 earned runs on 45 hits in 76 1/3 innings. Gutierrez has posted 120 strikeouts and walked just nine.

The Mustangs rank sixth in NCAA Division II with a team ERA of 1.24.

Sophomore Elena Bennett leads the Mustangs at the plate and ranks fifth nationally with a .515 batting average.

The center fielder has already amassed 50 hits and scored 30 runs while being successful on 23 of 24 stolen base attempts.

She is just one of three MSU players boasting .400 batting averages as she is joined by sophomore outfielder Courtney Bingham and freshman catcher Kim Jerrick.

Bingham is hitting .453 with six doubles, five triples and two homers. She ranks 15th in NCAA Division II with 32 RBIs or 1.39 per game.

Jerrick is hitting .429 with four doubles, five homers and 24 RBIs. She is second in the nation with a .579 on-base percentage.

The Mustangs also boast the No. 6 hitting attack in the nation with a .365 team batting average and are 13th in fielding percnetage at .973.

About the Field

Central Missouri (15-9) has won 15 of its last 17 games after starting the season with seven consecutive losses.

The Jennies are led at the plate by sophomore outfielder Ashlea Bengtson who is one of seven UCM batters hitting better than .300. Bengtson boasts a .405 average with seven doubles, a homer and 16 RBIs.

Junior Lacey Dixon (4-1, 2.29 ERA) and sophomore Sarah Espy (6-5, 2.39 ERA) lead Central Missouri in the circle. 

 

St. Mary's (20-13) has won five its last six games and took two of three at Texas-Permian Basin last weekend.

The Rattlers are led by sophomore third baseman Jared Gonzalez who leads the team with a .376 batting while stroking nine doubles, four homers and 22 RBIs.

She is one of five full-time players hitter better than .300 joined by senior catcher Chelsea Wenske (.370, 11 2B, 1 HR, 20 RBI), sophomore Shelly Lee (.367, 9 2B, 2 3B), senior Lauren Miller (.352, 8 2B, 3 HR, 23 RBI) and sophomore Katie Nichols (.320, 9 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI).

St. Mary's is paced in the circle by freshman Emily Brittain (14-6, 1.76 ERA). 

 

Delta State (9-15) has lost seven of its last eight games coming into the weekend are a coming off of a four-game sweep by Ouachita Baptist.

The Lady Statesmen are led by senior outfielder Crista Richard with a .333 batting average with four doubles and seven stolen bases.

Freshman Victoria Combs represents DSU's best hope in the circle posting a 6-6 mark with a 2.51 ERA in 75 1/3 innings pitched. 

 

St. Edward's (18-13) rolls into the MSU Invitational on a seven-game winning streak.

The Hilltoppers boasts four hittiners topping the .300 mark and are led by senior shortstop Lexi Stephens, who hits .419 with two doubles and a triple to go along with 14 stolen bases.

Junior second baseman Miranda Yeager (.357, 7 2B, 18 RBIs), senior catcher Courtney Lavender (.337, 6 2B, 2 HR, 21 RBI) and senior first baseman Stacy Giles (.333, 5 2B, 4 HR, 22 RBIs) bring depth to the SEU order.

In the circle, St. Edward's is led by junior Paige Sandahl (8-5, 2.62 ERA) and senior Diana Cezeaux (6-6, 4.03 ERA).
